Industry Report - AgricultureIndustry gross value addedAgriculture, forestry and fishingIndustry gross value added in agriculture, forestry and fishing fell 5.4% in seasonally adjusted terms in the September 2012 quarter, down from -0.5% growth in the June quarter. There was a decrease of 5.5% in the agriculture sector, with a drop of 4.7% for forestry and fishing. By comparison, Australia’s gross value added rose by 0.3% for the September quarter, with Australia’s GDP rising by 0.5% overall for the quarter, seasonally adjusted.
Wheat stocksAustralia’s wheat stocks decreased by 1,991 thousand tonnes in September, with wheat stocks now at 7.1 million tonnes. Stocks are currently 14.1% lower than at the same time last year. Of the wheat grain stored by bulk grain handlers, some 69% was graded for milling, with 31% graded for feed. With the Australian wheat harvest season now concluded, wheat stocks fell in all states and territories in September 2012. The most significant decrease was reported in New South Wales, where wheat stocks fell 23.6%.Livestock productsIn seasonally adjusted terms, there was a 1.6% increase in lambs slaughtered in the September quarter 2012. In the same time period, cattle slaughtered rose 5.1% and pigs slaughtered fell 2.4%. The estimate for live sheep exports in original terms fell by 30.3% in the September quarter, with a 20.3% decrease in cattle exports over the same time period. However compared to September 2011 live sheep exports were down 20.6%, compared to a 10.2% increase in live cattle exports.
