Industry Report - Building and constructionSensis® Business IndexBuilding and constructionThe building and construction sector recorded a 26 percentage point drop in SME confidence in the November 2012 Sensis® Business Index, with confidence sitting at -7%. Confidence amongst SMEs in the building and construction sector was below the national average of 19%. Key issues contributing to the drop in confidence in the building and construction sector this quarter included business being slow at the moment, and the sector being a difficult sector to operate in at the moment.
Industry gross value addedConstructionIndustry gross value added in construction rose 0.1% seasonally adjusted in the September 2012 quarter, down from 1.3% growth in the June quarter. By comparison, Australia’s gross value added rose by 0.3% for the September quarter, with Australia’s GDP rising by 0.5% overall for the quarter, seasonally adjusted. Building approvalsNovember 2012Building approvals for dwelling units in November 2012 rose 2.9% seasonally adjusted, following a fall of 5.1% in October. Overall building approvals were up 13.2% in November, compared to November last year. Total private sector building approvals rose 3.9% seasonally adjusted in November 2012. While there was a fall of 0.3% in the number of approvals for private sector houses, this was balanced by a larger 10.1% drop in the number of approvals for private sector other dwellings, which have been volatile in recent months, but overall are up 36.3% compared to the same time last year.
