Transport and storage
The transport and storage sector recorded a 17 percentage point improvement in SME confidence in the November 2012 Sensis® Business Index, with confidence sitting at 3%. Confidence amongst SMEs in the transport and storage sector was well below the national average of 19%. SMEs in the sector cited increasing costs, cutting back on staff and expenses and a lack of business growth as the reasons for their confidence this quarter.

Transport, postal and warehousing
Industry gross value added in the transport, postal and warehousing sector fell 1.5% seasonally adjusted in the September 2012 quarter, down from 2.4% growth in the June quarter. The only sub-sector to record growth in the September quarter was rail, pipeline and other transport, which was up 0.2% for the quarter. The largest decline was recorded for transport, postal and storage services which was down 2.3% for the quarter.

Sales in the transport, postal and warehousing sector fell 2.1% in seasonally adjusted terms in the September 2012 quarter.

In the same period:
  • Business gross operating profits rose 4.6% in seasonally adjusted terms
  • Wages fell 2.4% in seasonally adjusted terms
